English Cocker Spaniel

The English Cocker Spaniel is a medium-sized, well-proportioned dog. It has a smooth and silky coat, and its front paws are covered with copious fur. The coat of a Cocker Spaniel may be a variety of hues and color combinations.

Origins

The English Cocker Spaniel is among the oldest breeds of spaniel. The breed may be traced back to Spain in the fourteenth century. Before the year 1600, all spaniel species were categorized: the bigger ones were employed for spring hunting of animals and birds, while the smaller ones were used for woodcock hunting.

Consequently, the breeds were given the names springer (spring) and cocker (woodcock). The British Kennel Club differentiated between these two breeds in 1892. On the opposite side of the Atlantic, the Americans used the same breeding stock to create the American Cocker Spaniel, a somewhat different Cocker Spaniel.

Character
